Distinguished and Famous people from Melville
🎨 Zali Morgan and Rohin Kickett
Zali Morgan’s Goolugatup Heathcote residency produced Djilab-k Kwobidak Bilya, a watercolour monotype evoking the Derbal Yerrigan, or Swan River. The work brings cultural memory into an interpretation of place. Another artist represented in Melville’s collection, Rohin Kickett, drew on his great-grandfather’s experience of being refused service at the Raffles Hotel for the commissioned work No Service for Charlie. These are specific local artistic connections, through working time, family history and recognisable sites. Together the works show how an art collection can hold difficult histories as well as attractive views.
🎬 Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger’s Melville association is remembered at Heathcote, where he spent time during his youth. A memorial arranged with his family includes chessboards, reflecting an interest beyond acting. His screen career developed from Australian work such as Two Hands into international films including Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight. The Heathcote connection preserves a quieter part of a life usually described through film roles and awards. It links a familiar riverside setting with the young Perth actor before the pressures and visibility of an international career.
